The first week of Summer Camp is history! Over the course of the week 26 campers attended camp.

The campers enjoyed learning new songs during opening exercises along with raising the flag, pledge of Allegiance, and singing the National Anthem.

The campers are divided into three age groups:  Ages 3 to 6, 7 to 9, and 10 to 12. We also had three Counselors in Training, ages 13 and 14, who each helped the Lead Teacher and Teachers in each group. We have an awesome team to lead the campers each day!

We still have room for more campers, so hurry and get enrolled before we are full!

Dear Parents,

My name is Wes Holtey.  I will be working at Serendipity Kids Ranch Outdoor Camp this Summer as a counselor/teacher.  I have been a multi-certified classroom teacher for nearly 20 years.  I am certified in Math, Science, English, Social Studies, and Special Education.  I am also fluent in Spanish.

I have been working with some of the children in various subjects for 20 to 30 minutes each day.  The participating children seem to be enjoying themselves and some of the children not participating have asked if they could be tutored as well.  I have not told them no, but thought it necessary to communicate with you before beginning any sort of lessons.

Before I begin tutoring your child it would be helpful to have some sort of background information on your child.  It does not need to be lengthy.  It could be as simple as, “He/she needs help with 4th grade reading and multiplying 2 to 3 digit numbers.” I just need to have some idea as to what you want and where to begin with your child.

If this sort of tutoring interests you, please contact Lorna Dever, and we will schedule a time to help your child.

Thank you sincerely,

Wes A. Holtey

Putt-Putt golf was the sport of the week, although the campers also enjoyed the playground equipment on several days. Since we do not have a lifeguard yet in order to enjoy the Pacolet River, and due to the heavy rains making it unsafe for swimmers, the campers enjoyed various water activities in our Water Park.

Music has been given a great start with the aid of the Recycling Center, Blue Ridge Barbecue Festival, Mr. Juan's, Mimosa Inn, and Kyoto's who have contributed various sizes and shapes of wine and beer bottles for the camp bottle band. Scarfs from Steps to Hope and the Seventh-day Adventist Thrift Store can be seen waving in the breeze as the youngsters "dance" to music being played.

Every day the campers enjoyed various crafts such as Human Puppets, Elaborate Planes, and Decorated Tiles. Each Wednesday they will be working on a zoo, which will be assembled by the end of camp. Please see letter below.

Dear Parents,

We are excited about our newest project that we will be working on during art class! We are creating a replica of a zoo that we will be showing at the end of the summer. Every Wednesday will be set aside to work on this project and each child ages 7 – 12 will be working on an exhibit of their choice, and the ones ages 3 – 6 will be working on a group exhibit. We have a few items that we ask you to keep an eye out for:

  • Shoe Boxes

  • Cereal/cracker boxes, etc.

  • Paper towel and toilet paper rolls

  • Sewing thread spools (empty)

  • Soda/Water bottles

  • Cans

-           Thank You,

Sarah Painter

Dear Parents,

I am planning to have a music program for the children to perform for their families and friends near the end of camp -- before students start to leave camp. I need to know what day works best for you. I am thinking about August 8, at about 5 p.m. Parents, please let me know if you could make this because we are having several ensembles this summer, and we need all the participants we can get so we don't miss parts of the music.

Also, if any of you have any glass gallon bottles (like from cider), with small tops (similar in size to pop bottles), we need some of them for the lower notes in our bottle band. Thank you!!

I look forward to getting feedback from you regarding the proposed date for the program, and thank you for sharing your children with us this summer. They are so very special, and we feel privileged to work with them,

Judy Montrose
